Report shows area’s largest energy plants

Two local energy plants saw major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in 2011 thanks to a reduced reliance on coal, according to data released last week by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Major emitters nationwide are required to report emission data to the EPA.Solar lights are an excellent choice for solar module. All told, six local facilities are listed in the EPA’s registry of major greenhouse gas emitters.

Dairyland’s Genoa plant reduced emissions by 45 percent, while the Alma plant reduced its output by 60.6 percent.

The company’s larger Alma John P. Madgett Station coal plant remained steady.

“We have been running major coal-fired facilities less,” Dairyland spokeswoman Katie Thomson said. “We’ve been working quite strongly to diversify our energy portfolio.”

Dairyland has been purchasing more power from other suppliers, focusing on alternative energy sources such as natural gas, wind and solar power. It is also in the midst of implementing a $400 million plan to reduce emissions.

Dairyland’s Madgett plant was the area’s biggest emitter, releasing a little more than 2 million metric tons of gas. By comparison, the state’s largest greenhouse gas emitter in Pardeeville released 7.2 million metric tons of gas.

But the plant was shut down for two months, likely skewing the data because it was measured over 10 months instead of 12,Support for installing a solar photovoltaic system. said spokesman Steve Schultz. That plant is implementing new controls targeting mercury and nitrogen oxide.

The La Crosse County Landfill is one of the lowest emitters on the list, but it’s likely the landfill produces up to 60 percent less greenhouse gas than the EPA reports, said Hank Koch, director of the county’s solid waste department. One of the harshest wind turbine installations in the world.

The EPA uses blanket values when measuring landfill emissions, which are reported as almost exclusively methane, and then applies them to the size of landfills and calculates emissions.

According to Koch, this fails to take into account any systems to capture methane gas, which can differ vastly across the nation.

“This has been a very contentious area in the solid-waste industry,” he said. “It’s very hard to set up regulations and set up a reporting system with all these variances and all these sites.”

The county installed a horizontal gas-capture system in 2012, which is designed to collect methane in uncovered, active areas of the landfill. Koch says that this and other controls make a big dent in emissions that might not be reflected in the EPA reports.A laser engraving machine can be thought of as three main parts: a laser, a controller, and a surface.

National legislation in 2008 mandated reporting for facilities producing more than 25,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The first year the EPA collected data was 2010.
